TV's best husband talks the end of the run, growing co-stars and Zack Snyder.

For seven years on MEDIUM, Allison Dubois, played by Patricia Arquette, has seen and heard dead people, an ability she’s used to help the Phoenix, Arizona district attorney’s office. Her three young daughters all share some version of her gift. The only person in the household who doesn’t have psychic qualities is husband and father Joe Dubois, played by Jake Weber. Joe may at times be bewildered, skeptical or even totally exasperated, but he is unshakably loyal and loving, attributes that have had the character rated in multiple polls as one of the best spouses on TV.

MEDIUM spent five years on NBC, ending on a cliffhanger on both sides of the camera before the series was picked up by CBS for another two seasons, which will come to an end this Friday night. This interview with Weber was conducted when it was not known whether an eighth season might be forthcoming. The actor, whose film career includes starring roles in U-571, WENDIGO and the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake, sounds philosophical in any case.

The actor talks about playing his character for six years and dodging the cancellation bullet
By ABBIE BERNSTEIN, Contributing Writer
Published 5/3/2010

Jake Weber, known for feature film roles in WENDIGO, U-571, the remake of DAWN OF THE DEAD and THE HAUNTING OF MOLLY HARTLEY, is now in his sixth season of playing Joe Dubois on MEDIUM. Joe, a science-minded engineer, is married to Patricia Arquette’s psychic character Allison, who uses her gifts to help the Phoenix district attorney’s office. They have three daughters, all of whom seem to have inherited some aspect of Allison’s otherworldly gifts. However, nobody foresaw that, after five years on NBC, the series would be cancelled, so that the fifth-season finale was a cliffhanger that saw Allison comatose in the hospital. Happily for all concerned, CBS picked up MEDIUM; the show is now airing first-run episodes on its new network Friday nights.

iF MAGAZINE: Would you have felt bad about where your character Joe was left off if MEDIUM had ended with last season’s cliffhanger?

JAKE WEBER:
Not so much for my character, but there are two hundred and fifty people there with families and jobs that would have had a real hard time right now – it’s a tough time to be unemployed. It would have been nice if we’d known we were going to finish – it would have been nice to have some closure to it, rather than leave it on a cliffhanger. So many great shows have just ended like that. It would have been a shame to end it without having some sort of storyline that was satisfying for an audience. And also, it would have been sad for the two hundred and thirty people who worked on the show to all of a sudden be made [unemployed].

[Sad Face]: Pizquita.com hasn't updated their MEDIUM Website since last week's episode (should've noticed something when they didn't upload a promo ad for "Once in a Lifetime"), so I'll still be waiting for them to upload the Hi-Res images. In the meantime, snagged some of the promotional images from mediumdreams.com (all of which are fuzzy from obvious manipulation of the pictures resolution). On a side note, I could've sworn I'd seen Allison wear that blue shirt before.

Who doesn’t love Entertainment Weekly? Recently, the writers got together and did a list of random people from entertainment who they consider hot or otherwise intriguing. So who’s one of the first names on EW writer Michael Slezak’s list? Well, if you haven’t guessed from the headline that it’s Jake Weber, well, then I really don’t know what I’m doing here.

So what does Slezak have to say about Mr. Joe Dubois?

Joe Dubois (Jake Weber), ‘Medium’: Best. Husband. On. Television.”

That’s what I’m sayin’! I know that I’m just repeating myself at this point, but to me, Medium isn’t about a psychic who helps solve crimes. It’s about a family based upon a strong marriage in which the mother happens to have a weird job and some sleep issues. What’s more relatable than that? Joe DuBois gets impatient; sometimes he yells, sometimes Allison yells, but he always supports her. No matter what crazy thing she is going through, or how much of a strain it is putting on their marriage, at the end of the day, Allison knows that Joe is going to be there for her. Now that’s what I call hot.

It's the Husband, Joe

I've seen almost every episode of NBC's Medium since it debuted last year. The show succeeds because it integrates a crazy premise (a woman's psychic dreams help her solve crimes) with a completely normal family life.  The character who holds everything together is Joe Dubois, portrayed by Jake Weber. He is the "perfect" husband of the title character, Allison. His job is to keep the family running while serving as a sounding board for his wife's dreams. The show typically begins like most Law & Order and CSI shows, as someone is getting killed or severely harmed. Instead of the cops showing up to clean up the mess, we see Allison waking up from a dream.

Unfortunately, this doesn't mean the crime is all a dream. Joe usually has to help Allison interpret the dream. Either the crime happened in the past, or it will happen in the future.  After getting some advice from Joe, Allison goes to her job as a consultant with the Phoenix Police Department. There, she helps to solve (or prevent) the crime.

Joe is a great character because of his reaction to his wife's special gift. He accepts and understands the way she is, and he tries to calm Allison down and figure out what the dream means. At the same time, Joe is often confused and exasperated by his wife's reaction to her dreams. He is forced to live in the real world, while his wife is literally interacting with ghosts.

We also see the realistic aspect of Joe and Allison's life. When they aren't talking in bed about Allison's latest dream, we see them making breakfast and carting their girls off to school. Allison (Patricia Arquette) is a strong character, too, but she is always busy dealing with her nighttime visions. Joe is almost an extension of the audience, as he wonders how Allison's dreams relate to real life.

Honorable mention goes to the oldest daughter, Ariel (played by Sofia Vassilieva). She is very believable as a moody, confused 13-year-old who occasionally experiences the same type of dreams as her mother and fights with her younger sister. When she was younger, she played the title role in "Eloise at the Plaza" and "Eloise at Christmastime" along with Julie Andrews.
