Friday, Jan. 8 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) - "An Everlasting Love” – The police hunt a serial killer targeting innocent women, but when the prime suspect dies, his ghost contacts Allison to clear his name, contact his girlfriend and maybe help the investigation. Also, Joe’s boss asks him to critique his new novel, on MEDIUM, on the CBS Television Network.

After a long holiday month and seven days into January, MEDIUM returns for the new year with a new episode and what a way to return, no? It might've been a result of the obnoxious chatter from my family in the background, but, I wasn't quite expecting most of what happened in the episode, even if I read the details beforehand weeks before the episode itself aired.

For starters, the fact that I'd seen Joel David Moore (Keith) as Joe's boss, before I went to see James Cameron's AVATAR, didn't occur to me until I watched this episode. I practically laughed, "He was the jerk-boss from the other episode!" I kept expecting Mitch Pileggi to be the "boss" wanting Joe to critique his novel. With that said, as a writer, I could totally sympathize with Keith's nervousness about Joe's opinion on his book and his anger was not totally unexpected when Joe summed his opinion of his "manuscript" up to "defuse", but that was just outright mean what he did to Joe in that meeting :(.

But the end result, Joe marching into his office and attempting to set Keith straight (whilst wanting him to apologize) was hilarious! Joe just flat out calling Keith names (before settling on "Punk") and Keith getting riled up made for a fantastic moment for Jake and Joel. I totally expected a there to be a fistfight with Keith's "old school" remark, but instead they duke it out like a couple of nerds and try to outdo each other by playing arcade games.

With that said, Allison's first dream was like something out of Scream, but instead of a incredibly stupid young woman having a prolonged conversation with a stranger on the phone, Gretchen hangs up every time the stranger calls. Not that her sensibilities help her in the end, as its the discovery of her dead dog (which probably unsettled me more than the dead Noami hanging in her closet) that does her in, she's become emotionally compromised and is no longer thinking straight.

I really thought Allison's proactive gift worked to her advantage this time, because despite the fact that nothing changed for Jinxie the dog, she managed to keep Gretchen alive, by pointing out the suspicious lurking across the street to Scanlon. But then, the dead guy, Jeremy shows up in the morgue not long after his death and says he's not the Penny Jar killer. Like Allison, we're inclined to not to believe this guy's story, but maybe he's telling the truth. Then she ends up getting this odd montage of romance between Jeremy and this unknown woman (that I almost assumed was Noami, given her blonde hair) via The Turtles' "So Happy together", and well, all I can bring myself to think is "Well, that was random!"

Poor Allison is practically guilted into doing some Ghost Whisperering for Jeremy, with the promise that he can give her the identity of the Penny Jar killer. All the while, I couldn't help but wonder why I should bring myself to car so much about this Jeremy guy. His girlfriend, Mandy (Jess Weixler of the indie horror/comedy, Teeth), however, is a picture of absolute misery, so she pretty much gets me sympathizing for both Jeremy and herself. Afterward, however, the fact that Jeremy interrupts Allison's dream of who the killer is, brings me right back to the suspcision that he, in some weird post-death way, is really is the killer they were looking for. (If we've learned anything from Agent Cooper, is that ghosts giving out free information without encryption aren't really trustworthy.)

All in all, even when Jeremy is pretty much labeled the killer, I did not expect Mandy to be in cahoots with him! I'm not sure about anyone else, but that little bit of misdirection got me good. I wholly expected this be another "You might get away, but I'll be watching" episodes like "You Give me Fever" was. Jeremy was absolutely confident about the fact that his girlfriend was going to get away with murdering Gretchen, but Allison's then-questionable course of action, showing Mandy a jogger to make friends with, was ultimate the nail in Mandy's coffin. I was so relieved when the jogger was revealed to be undercover cop (I figured Allison just sent a unsuspecting woman off to her doom just catch a thief).

Which brings us to one of the more funnier parts of the episodes, instead of being happy Mandy is dead and probably stuck with him, Jeremy is beside himself with anger and the two go at it like old married couple, bickering while all those witnessed Mandy's death move on to other things.

So, all in all, I really enjoyed this episode. I can't wait for next week's episode, which looks positively gripping in concerns to Manuel.
