Hello ... I've just joined this fabulous community and wanted to take the time to post a quick intro and some info I hope most of you will find interesting ... namely about the real Allison Dubois.
I coincidentally became a "Medium" fan when I moved to Phoenix, AZ ... in fact the first episode of "Medium" aired on the first night of my drive across the country from VA to AZ ... I watched it with a friend of mine when I stopped for the night in TN. As soon as I got here I started looking for activities relating to Allison Dubois ... I figured with the show taking off there would be some.
Allison just came out with a book entitled "Don't Kiss Them Goodbye" and it is currently at number 7 on the NY Times Bestseller List for Non-Fiction books. I was fortunate to be able to go to a book signing and Q&A of Allison's here in Phoenix about three weeks ago. I've included excerpts from my LJ entry about the event for anyone interested.
Enjoy ... and expect to hear more from me when the eps start to air again. ;)
By the time I got to Barnes and Noble at Desert Ridge Mall at 7:00 on Tuesday the place was packed with 300 people and they had run out of books. (Good thing I had my own copy.) I don't think anyone expected that kind of turn-out ... not even Allison. People were crunched into the aisles and standing on tables to see where she was speaking. It was a mad-house.
Allison talked for about fifteen minutes on a lot of subjects, most of which involved her work, and took a lot of questions from the audience about the show and a lot from people just fulfilling curiosity. One woman, for example, asked if she could see dead people in the room right now. Her response was "With three hundred people here and each of you with your own baggage, would you want to be able to see what I'm seeing?"
There were questions about what happens to murder victims and whether or not they want us to avenge their deaths (no, they don't). There were questions about Allison's abilities and their extent. She revealed that she likes to go to ghost towns around AZ to explore, that she is extraordinarily busy (booked for the next three years with readings and no longer accepting new clients) and that she drinks Dr Pepper by the gallon. There were also some very touching questions asked and the answers have stayed with me ever since ... I want to share with you verbatim the answers she gave.
Q: Do you know what Heaven is like?
A: Heaven is a place where the water is the bluest blue you've ever seen and the sky is blindingly white. It's a place filled with grass and trees and water, with picnic tables where old men sit and play chess, where whole families meet and rejoice and spend time together.
Q: What happens to people who commit suicide?
A: People who commit suicide do so because of a chemical imbalance, because something is wrong inside their brains that they have no control over. When they die, that imbalance is gone ... they are whole again, their anguish gone. People who commit suicide, contrary to a lot of religious beliefs, do not go to hell. They don't have to sit in the dark, alone, with no one to play with. They're with their family and friends, out of pain, whole again, and at peace.
Q: Do people who have died hear us when we talk to them?
A: Yes, they hear you. And it gives them a sense of peace and a sense of joy to hear from you. They are around, they do listen, and you can sense them. But what they don't want you to do is mourn them forever, to forget to live your own life in mourning the end of theirs. What I can tell you-- and this will be the title of my next book-- is that you are their heaven. And they do love you. They always will.
Allison also talked alot about what things in the show "Medium" have actually happened to her and what are constructs of screenwriters ... and more of the show is true to life than you might think. All three of Allison's daughters do, in fact, have their own gifts and do spend time realizing their gifts. Her daughter Bridget DID play with a child who had been dead for years, and Allison DID spend time with the victim of an arson trying to figure out who had set the fire. She does have to wear an Ipod when she goes to cemetaries and hospitals because the dead are drawn to her and try to speak to her. Her brother does have his own gift that is learning to deal with and she did help with the case from the pilot ... finding the body of a murdered child in Texas and the scene was washed away. What she does not have is dreams. The dreams are a great way to get viewers into the show but when Allison sleeps in real life she does not dream. It is, she says, her only time of respite. What she gets instead are flashes, intuitions, things that she can see and hear. She does see the dead and can talk to them. But the dreams, fortunately for her, are only a Hollywood creation. But everything else on the show, according to Allison, are right on the mark.
Her husband Joe was at the book signing as well and a lot of people were getting him to sign their books, too. He doesn't look at all like Jake Weber but is still VERY handsome ... dark tan, mdeium height, great build, dark hair, dark eyes, a wonderful shy smile, and a great sense of fashion ... they both have a great sense of fashion. He wrote a chapter for her book called "Loving a Medium" and it's quite touching. Anyone interested in Joe's character on the show will want to read it.
