Fast National ratings for Friday, Jan. 29, 2010:

After last week's "Hope for Haiti Now" telethon, Friday returned to its usual programming, which means CBS claimed victory once again in each hour of primetime even though numbers overall were soft. FOX's "Dollhouse" series made its final goodbyes to even more lackluster ratings, performing worse than The CW's "Smallville" in the same hour.

CBS drew 8.3 million viewers and a 5.2 rating /9 share in households for the night. NBC took second with 6.4 million and a 4.2/7, followed by ABC (5.7 million, 3.8/7), FOX (2.7 million, 1.7/3) and The CW (2.0, 1.3/2). CBS also took the adults 18-49 demo crown with a 1.8 rating. ABC came next with a 1.5, then NBC, 1.4, FOX, 1.1, and The CW, 0.8. and NBC tied for second at 1.5, and FOX scored a 1.0. The CW managed only a 0.5.

After a week off for the telethon, Medium returned with a very dark episode that had one surprising twist, and one surprising non-twist. The surprise twist came in what was a very Medium case of the week, complete with murder, conspiracy, and some truly frightening dreams for Allison. The non-twist took advantage of all those things the show has shown us about the Dubois girls’ growing powers to completely set us up, and then leave us holding the bag. It all made for a fun night.

The story of Summer Lowry (Danielle Panabaker, Shark) was scarily dark, and well crafted. The way the story played out, the viewer was yet another in the large group of people Summer was able to fool. The big reveal that Chad (Tobias Segal) had actually killed their parents seemed like a perfect Medium set-up. We had the who, but now it came down to whether or not Allison could put the pieces together to get her man.
