In the three months since a 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti, activists across the globe have been scrambling to bring relief to the impoverished Caribbean country. Thousands of Haitians died in the quake and subsequent aftershocks, while estimates report 2 to 3 million people still in need of basic food and shelter. Numerous international aid groups have poured resources into Haiti, but the local situation continues to surpass the current level of support from abroad.
Patricia Arquette means to change that. Starting with a single, innovative mission in one Haitian community, she launched the Give Love Foundation in late March. Its mission: to "rebuild communities, homes & livelihood for displaced earthquake survivors.”
Arquette has teamed up with Houston architect Christopher Robertson to quickly solve one piece of the Haitian relief puzzle. Housing is the first order of business for Give Love, and the organization is currently implementing plans for cost-effective, hurricane-resistant housing able to withstand future earthquakes. A total of 50 ‘container homes’ (pictured above) will house 400 homeless people currently living in make-shift camps north of Port-au-Prince. Robertson’s container home design involves using refurbished shipping containers, simply modified to provide for air circulation and maximum space efficiency. Extended roofing offers residents a porch-like exterior, a needed respite from the blistering sun and frequent Caribbean rains. The cost: $4,000 per structure.
