[05.05]: "A Taste of her Own Medicine"

MEDIUM: Monday, March 2nd 10/9c - "A Taste of Her Own Medicine" Allison gets involved in the case of a missing woman. Guest starring Blythe Danner. (TV-14 V)

In this evening's episode, the crime really took a back seat to the lives of the Dubois' Family, Scanlon and Lynn (Ms. Deputy Mayor). For starters, before this episode aired, I was worried about what "turn" Lee and Lynn's relationship would take, mostly, because I figured the two of them would break up because Lynn was getting fed up with Lee's less than stellar communication skills.

What I wasn't expecting, was the strange motnage of broken celebrity relationships, the splitscreen moment between Allison, Joe, and Angry!Ariel (wonder what that was all about?), and the sudden paraody of JUNO! Watching Miguel Sandoval and Tina DiJoseph reenact the convenience store scene from the movie, with such deadpan delievery made me roll (particularly with the way Lynn snapped "Silencio, Old Man!"). I really didn't expect Lynn to be Pregnant with Scanlon's child (I wonder if the actress is actually pregnant, 'cause I couldn't really tell), I figured it would be nothing more than a scare. That aside, I really liked that they took some time to focus on Lynn and Scanlon's relationship outside of the little moments in which they shared in a bed with each other during the night, only to be disurbed by something concerning their jobs. And with the way, Scanlon was behaving, I really didn't think he'd show up at the party for her. Thank Goodness I was wrong.

On the DuBois side of things: Joe's Sleep Deprivation issue and the whole "Sleeping apart" thing was, thankfully, a non-crisis event. I really liked that it was handled like an almost casual thing to figure out. I loved that Allison didn't fly off the handle because I really thought she would when Joe was beating around the bush about what his doctor said to him and she thought he [or his doctor] was accusing her of keeping him up all night. (Allison having them take shifts sleeping on the Couch and Bed, was smart on her part.) During that scene when Allison was talking to Joe and he, unfortunately, was asleep at the computer and didn't know he dozed off until Allison woke him, I feared our Poor Joe was actually suffering from Narcolepsy or something. It was also nice to see the two of them outside of house at a party. Between Allison, Joe, Lee and Lynn, I wasn't sure who had the more squeeable moment together. All I can say is, that I like Joe's wizened second opinion doctor.

What I'm really happy about is the focus on little 'ol Marie. In my opinion, she really outshined Bridgette in this episode, with her inquisitiveness over the status of her parents due to her second older sister's "misinformation" and the silent prospect of being able to sleep her mommy now that she wasn't sleeping with Daddy. I was beaming at the full sentences coming out of her mouth. I know, that's she been speaking since episode one of this season, but to hear more than one line coming from Marie just made me squee. ["Daddy's Taking me to Florida!"] However, with the way Allison described their trip to the doctors to Joe, I wish they had shown Bridgette freaking out at the prospect getting her shots. Now, I'm just waiting for Ariel get more focus, because I can't help but wonder if most of her appearances were also taken when she wasn't shooting that movie, "My Sister's Keeper" with Cameron Diaz. That movie should be done by now, though.

Secondly: The Crime: This one was really underwhelming, for some reason. It started off as interesting, the first dream Allison had reminded me of the episodes "Raising Caine" and "To Have and to Hold", so I assumed that it would be following that strain of storytelling. Still, it was really lacking something to make it spark.

They got me a little confused when they pulled up that body from the contaminated lake and said that it was the first wife. (I mean, I was so sure it was the missing daughter.) There were two possibilities as who could've done it and I immediately thought of the mother. However, I found myself confused over what could've actually happened when Allison started to dream about the missing daughter killing the first wife with a unspecified poison in her coffee (Acid was the first thing that came to mind), assuming that was really coffee she gave her.

I kinda disregarded the mother as a suspect, and thought her daughter would show up later to kill her, when Allison dreamt of the mother becoming suspcious of her daughter's behavior and noticing Phoebe was becoming sicker instead of better. The second to final meeting with Blythe's character made me believe she was so sympathetic to her daughter (regardless of what she'd done), that I believed, like Allison did, that she was hiding her from the authorities. That is, until Allison had that dream showing the mother killing her daughter with the iced tea. I was waiting for Allison to dream about where the mother stashed the body, but alas it never came to pass and the resolution to this episode's crime really felt unresolved.

I could understand Allison not wanting to give the mother up to the police because of Phoebe, or even the fallout between her family having dealing with terrible truth of what she did, but the girl had the father to take care of her and Allison really didn't have too much of a problem with turning that woman in in"Sweet Child O'Mine". So I have to wonder if Allison's perspective on things like this have changed since season two. Did anybody else get the feeling the mother buried her daughter in the backyard, somewhere around pool area specifically?

Lastly: When Manuel explained the nature of his phone call to Allison, I almost thought the mother killed her daughter so she could give her heart Phoebe, but that was way too far-fetched to even be true, especially given that it was coming from someplace else.

Overall, not a bad episode, I'll probably have to rewatch it though.

Next week's episode really has me interested! I couldn't stop myself from thinking "Dawn of the Dead! ...Without zombies,", when I saw that figure, I believed to be Joe, strolling down the ruined streets with the Red Backpack on his shoulders, carrying a stick of some sort.

Blythe Danner MADE this episode--such a skilled actress. I was suspicious of her from the time the lost glasses were remarked on. Of course she put her daughter's body in the ground in the bottom of the soon to be pool (where the lost glasses were found).

Marie is such a cutie! I, too, was glad she had more lines.

I was not a fan of Allison not telling Devalos about the mother in the end, particularly because, as you mention, she's held herself duty-bound to the law before, even when situations were delicate, such as this one. That's a trait I always liked/respected about her, but she really disappointed me in this ep. :/

I hope the trend of glossing over crimes in favor of "happy endings" doesn't continue. There can still be happy endings - there just has to be justice, too.

I missed the promo for next week since I watched the ep on hulu. Will have to go looking for that... I'd *love* a DOTD tribute. Jake was so good in that!

During that scene when Allison was talking to Joe and he, unfortunately, was asleep at the computer and didn't know he dozed off until Allison woke him, I feared our Poor Joe was actually suffering from Narcolepsy or something.

Me too. When he nodded off, I was quite concerned for poor Joe - it all got wrapped up too easily for me, to be totally honest. That said, siestas seem to work in the South of Spain and it's very hot there in the summer. How Joe will manage to get naps in with three kids, being the only employee at his company (maybe he's hired someone else, he did say it took him months to find David in the last episode!) and generally staying awake after Allison's dreams I don't know! Good luck to him with that. :)

Little Marie was adorable in this episode. I chuckled at Bridgette and how trips to the doctors meant a treat of some sort. I remember going to the orthodonist in the city in early high school and my dad taking me to a cafe afterwards. No point battling with city traffic to rush home for the last 30 minutes of physical education.

I was surprised by Lynn being pregnant. I loved Allison's grin, both directly after the dream and in the conversation with Scanlon. The actress is dating/married to the show's creator, right?
