[05.09]: "All in the Family"

Monday, April 6th 10/9c - "All in the Family" Allison investigates the case of a mother gone missing and her very strange children. James Van Der Beek and Amanda Detmer guest star. (TV-14 V)

Okay, I was seriously considering not watching Medium with my Dad then we had an awesome laugh at Joe and his sister Sarah. I might keep him around, even if he does end up ruining the puzzle-box Mystery Game aspect of the show for me (grumbles).

Anyways, this was a fabulous episode, They weren't kidding about a "star-studded" episode! If I didn't know any better, the woman playing Van Der Beek's sister was Inara Serra (Morena Baccarin) from Firefly. She certainly looked like her, but I'm probably wrong on that front. And the subject of James Van Der Beek himself? He actually wasn't bad in this episode. I didn't even notice his prolonged forehead. I never followed his career in the least, but his performance was pretty good, if not a tad bit underused in this episode. The crime itself was sucessfully confusing me when Allison had dreams about the girlfriend and the Hoyt sister being dead and buried somewhere by her brother. However, my dad, being the rather observant man he is, "Ah, you see that? The Car accident? Its the girlfriend, the sister's dead." I just nodded and waited to find out myself. Of course after seeing that "incestous" moment between the "sibblings", I was so praying that the girlfriend had a plastic surgery and took up the dead sister's life ("One Behind the Wheel" subplot revisted). Thank Goodness it turned out to be right. However, I would've loved to have seen a dream featuring the Mother and the girlfriend!sister imposter, that probably would've cleared some things up for me alot quicker.

The opening montage, coupled with Patricia Arquette's montone description of Family and their purpouse in each others lives was great, especially with all the pictures that came and served as its background (Joe in sunglasses and Joe and Marie is love.♥♥♥), though I held my tongue when I saw the season three/four promo picture sans Allison leaning against the wall. The dream montage took something of a creepy-ass turn when they showed little Marie strolling silently toward her parents bedroom, a six shooter clasped in her tiny hands. Made it even worse with the sister, who would appear later on, coaxing her to kill them, that it would be perfectly okay. Honest to God Nightmare indeed, but Joe's groggy teasing of Allison's proclaimation of a "actual nightmare" made me laugh.

Now in Concerns with Joe's sister, whom I was rather happy showed up (and nearly mistook for Erica Durance), I'm offficially proclaiming "Continuity Error" as her name is Sarah and not Amanda. But aside from that, I loved that Allison wasn't completely like "Oh, lord, Joe's sister is here" until she saw the tofu and Mr. Dubois (Bruce Gray), yet another character I was happy to see again, show up and lie about his daughter's husband, Ryan, just to get her out of the house, before finally revealing that all would be well because his daughter was pregnant.

Joe Championing for his brother-in-law 'cause he liked him, was rather funny and extremely ironic once he found out that he really was cheating. He truly has a strange family.

I was really prepared for a obnxiously air-headed sister, but it was nice to see that the writers were subtle about Sarah's "Drama Queen" and rather immature behavior, especially since it only seemed to come out when her brother was around :P. She kinda reminds me of Michael in some ways. I loved the final moment between Sarah and Joe; His proclaimation of not knowing when he rolled his eyes at her totally reminded me of something I would do when I was accused of doing something and denied it only to do it anyways.

And finally, there's Ariel; She back to being her old immature and pouty self in this episode. And over a ski trip she probably couldn't afford and most definitely couldn't go on because every male accompanying her and her friends were far older than she. Which season III Episode am I thinking of? Was it "No One to Watch Over Me" where behaved the exact same about getting money to go on a expensive camping trip? I think so. Only this time she actually went on the trip and behind her parents backs, too. Call me vindictive, but at the moment, I can't wait until she gets her ears boxed in by Joe and Allison. She reminded me far too much my own sibblings when it came to sharing another room with her sisters, and complaining about giving her room up to another person, right down to the question how long Sarah was going to stay at the house.

Overall, fantastic episode. Can't wait to see how "And Then... Again" turns out.

Oh, and lookie, I found some Variation of a Season Four Promo on the Official Aussie website for Medium:

I googled her because I knew I recognised her, I'd seen her in the O.C.

I think Joe has at least two sisters. I just saw "The Song Remains the Same" with the thrice-married sister in SLC, but I believe tonight's episode was the return of the sister in Prescott (mentioned in the season one episode where we meet Scanlon and Joe thinks he has Allison surprised for her birthday). That would make sense because he dropped Marie off to stay with that sister in that episode and this time around he went visiting the husband at work.

I was happy to see the ghost of Joe's dad again. I really enjoyed this episode. The crime stuff was nothing new. I did love Scanlon going some further investigating on the basis of Allison's dreams with the restraining order.

Ariel's naive - parents always know, although I personally never went that far! I get grouchy too when I can't sleep and to have to get up early. Once thing I hated about backpacking was staying in hostels and people snoring. Things always seem more irritating sleep-deprived. I loved her bedroom posters of Snow Patrol and Wicked - made me smile.

Definitely want to watch next week to see what happens to Ariel. What did the preview show?

Nice picture, did they do any for this season?

It'll be interesting to see if they show the other two kids in the flashbacks, they will have to find pretty good matches for them if that's the case.

Thanks for the link, never seen that site before! :)

I know right? Kinda funny when you think about it (at least to me it is).

Yes, because it's not like 2004 is long before we saw the kids of screen.
