Actress Patricia Arquette Visits Students Working to Help Rebuild Haiti

"American Welding Society and Welding School Work with 'Medium' Star Patricia Arquette’s Give Love Foundation to Build Shelter for Families in Haiti."

WHAT: Upon her return from a humanitarian two-week trip to Haiti, actress Patricia Arquette will visit welding students at Robert Morgan Education Center in South Miami-Dade who are working with her Give Love Foundation to build doors and roofing trusses for new housing in Haiti.

The American Welding Society teamed up the welding students with Arquette, an Emmy Award-winning actress, and fashion designer Rosetta Getty, to help build 54 housing structures on a one-acre site in Cite Soleil, Port-au-Prince. The units will be constructed out of shipping containers and provide immediate relief for displaced families who are currently camped at the L’Athletique d’Haiti soccer field.

As Haiti struggles to rebuild after the devastating earthquake in January of this year, millions of people are still without any adequate shelter. Despite the massive international disaster and relief operation, the long-term needs of displaced communities are still not being addressed for the majority of the homeless people. With families living in tents and the rainy season upon them, these camp cities are vulnerable to flooding and the spread of water-borne disease.



Arquette and Getty’s foundation, Give Love (www.givelove.org) is focused on working collaboratively with displaced communities in Haiti to resettle homeless families from the chaotic environment of the tent cities. The foundation is implementing a methodical pilot project that will develop and evaluate sustainable low-cost building technologies, green fuel and sanitation systems, and other long-term living solutions for displaced communities within Haiti. The students will be welding doors and roof trusses during Arquette’s visit to the school, making for great visuals.
